Friends of Chernobyl's Children brings children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster from Belarus to the Edinburgh and West Lothian area for a 4 week visit each year.
The charity targets children aged between 7 and 13 from orphanages or disadvantaged backgrounds. The main thrust of our work brings the children away from the seriously contaminated environment in their own country in order to detoxify their immune systems and to provide dental, optical and if necessary, health checks.
During their month's stay in Scotland the children live with a host family who provide a friendly and stable environment, nourishing food and lots of loving care. The charity meanwhile organises a varied program of educational and recreational activities which the children attend during normal school times. The children often return to the same host families for several years.
Our support continues when the children return to Belarus by providing vitamins, clothes and other essential items for the children and their families in order to maintain the benefits of their visits.
We operate on an entirely voluntary basis, with every penny raised being used to directly support the children and their annual visit to Scotland.
