Crohn’s and Colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) which last a lifetime and for which there is no cure.
They can strike at
any age but most commonly begin in children, teenagers and young adults. Around
240,000 people in the UK have these conditions and more are diagnosed each year.
Symptoms can include relentless diarrhoea; bleeding;
severe pain; exhaustion; eye, skin and joint problems, and, in the case of
children, impaired growth. The conditions can therefore have a devastating
impact on education, work, social and family life.
Crohn’s and Colitis UK (NACC) is the major UK charity
offering information and support to people affected by these conditions.
Established in 1979 as a partnership between patients, their families, friends
and the health professionals caring for them, the charity services include
helplines, a website, and a wide range of leaflets and information sheets. NACC
also raises awareness, campaigns for improved health care and funds vital
research.
